The Righting Moment

by Stephen S. Power

My boat, when heeled by sudden waves or gusts,
its buoyancy and weight pushed out of line,
will find its balance as the former thrusts
around the latter’s centerpoint in time.

This moment, this defiance of the sea
by physics, of the random by the sure,
is why I trust my boat implicitly.
I wish my heart were equally secure.

Your glance, which you think just a gentle breeze,
to me explodes, a wild electric storm
that throws me over with the greatest ease,
and each capsizing makes me want you more.

I’m only righted when I see my wife
and set back on the long course of my life.
