Guinness Is Good For You

by T.S. Kerrigan

That statement, old before my birth,
Proclaimed in every pub on earth,
Attained the state of holy writ.
What lad among the friends I knew
Had any doubt those words were true?

With Guinness running from the taps
Like nurture from our mothers’ paps,
We did the things our fellows did,
Enjoyed the whorl of drinker’s lives,
Neglecting parents, children, wives.

Now anecdotal men at bars,
We gather for our nightly jars.
I ask myself, though rather late,
Did we deplete our lives and wealth
In drinking one another’s health?
